On Sunday 22 May, Team Triangle will be joining thousands of others on the streets of Manchester to race in the Great Manchester 10K Run and support one of the most inspirational charities in the city.
Manchester Mind is an independent mental health charity that provides invaluable help and services to young people and adults.
Helping some of the most vulnerable in our society, it runs brilliant, practical projects that make a real difference to people who are struggling to know where to turn for help and how to find a sense of purpose in their lives.
From cafés to allotments, and social enterprises to outreach and mentoring projects, Manchester Mind provides them with somewhere to go and something to do, as well as setting up valuable work experience opportunities, with support from skilled mentors, that can help them make the transition to paid employment.
Even a brief visit to one of these projects is enough to get a real sense of bonds being created and to witness the self-esteem gained by people who are living with mental health problems.
So why are we so passionate about supporting Manchester Mind?
Mental health is still a difficult, almost taboo subject for many. Thankfully, as a society, we’ve come a long way from the days when we talked about the mentally ‘deranged’ and institutes were provided for the mentally ‘detained’.
Yet mental health is still the poor relation when it comes to public funding, public profile and public support.
Poignantly for us in PR, one of the major challenges for people struggling with mental health is the difficulty they face when it comes to telling their own story, championing their own cause and getting people to see things from their perspective.
For people living in the world of confusion, isolation and fear that often accompanies poor mental health, it can be difficult enough to discern what’s ‘real’, let alone articulate what that place feels and looks like.
That’s why it’s down to others, like Manchester Mind, to champion their cause for them.
And why it’s down to people like us to support Manchester Mind’s work to create places where people can build skills, self-esteem, friendships and the confidence to ensure their future stories are happier than those of the past.
